A Study on Validity and Reliability of the Korean Version of Irritability Depression Anxiety Scale

Abstract
|
|
|
this study was performed to examine the validity and reliability of the Korean version of Irritability Depression Anxiety scale(IDA) . IDA was translated into Korean by a Korean psychiatrist, and reviewed by another Korean psychiatrist who is
very
familiar with English, IDA was administered to 393 person (183 normal person and 210 admitted patients in general hospitals, 283 males and 110 females) aged 18-65(mean 36.20). Test-retest was done in 40 medical students with interval of 1 week.
To
examine content validity of IDA, Buss-Durkee Inventory(BHI) and Symptom Check List-90-Revised(SCL-90-R) were also checked.
The results were as follows ;
1. The odd-even reliability of IDA was r=.71 for the normal subjects and .64 for the patients Test-retest reliasility of one week interal for Total(IDAT), Anxiety(IANX), Depression(IDEP), Irritability directed outward(IDO), and Irritability
directed
inward(IDI) subscale was .64, .52, -65, -56, and .72 respectively. Internal consistency computed using KR formula 20 were r=.66 in both groups.
2. Most subscales of IDA were correlated with sebscales of SCL-90-R significantly in both groups, especially with Hostility subscale. Correlation between IDO and Positive symptom distress index subscale in the normal group neither IDEP and
Hostility or
Paranoid ideation subscale in the patient group were not significant.
3. In correlation with BDHI, IDO, IDI, IANX, and IDAT subscales were highly correlated with almost all subscales of BDHI in both groups. IDEP was correlated with just a few subscales(such as resentmetn, suspicion or guilt)of BDHI.
4. Factor analysis yielded 3 factors in normal group and 4 in patient group. In normal group, Psychiatric symptom component consisted of 9 suboutward component consisted of 8 subscales of BDHI, IDO, and Hostility, Paranoid ideation subscale of
SCL-90-R. The third component, named Hostility directed inward and psychological distress component consisted of IDI, IDEP, IANX, Guilt subscale of BDHI, and Somatization, Depression, Anxiety subscales of SCL-90-R.
In patient group, Psychiatric symptom component consisted of 9 subscales of SCL-90-R, IDI, IANX, and Resentment subscale of BDHI. Hostility directed outward component consisted of 7 subscales of BDHI, IDO, IDI, and Hostility subscale of SCL-9-R,
The
third component, named Passive and directed inward hostility compoment consisted of IDI, Assault and Irritability suscales of BDHI, Paranoid ideation and Psychoticism subscales of SCL-90-R. Psychological distress component consisted of IDEP and
IANX.
From these results, the authors suggest that Korean version of IDA can give us relatively reliable and comprehensive information about four kinds of emotion even though it has limited conceptual validity for its simplicity.
